Intellectuals CC vs San Fulgencio CC

Sunday 13th February, at Bonalba Cricket Ground

Intellectuals CC                126 all out off 25.1 overs

San Fulgencio CC              76 all out off for 30.3 overs

Intellectuals win by 50 runs

Blue sunny skies greeted the players on Sunday for the first Bonalba friendly of 2011. The Intellectuals were put in to bat after losing the toss, and whilst scoring at a good rate were also losing wickets fast. A modest 126 was posted after 25 overs, with Dawes and Tanveer highest scorers on 46 and 22 respectively. Williams and Woods for San Fulgencio took three wickets apiece ending 3-27 off 6 and 3-19 off 3.

At the change of innings San Fulgencio suffered an early loss with a run-out in the first over. However they recovered well and at the half way point the game was balanced with San Fulgencio on 60 for 5 with 20 overs left. At this point the Intellectuals decided to hold on to their catches (at least Grantham and Naveed did – both ending with two apiece), and whilst the visitors batted for another 10 overs they were unable to score the required runs – tight bowling from Grantham (3 overs, 3 maidens, 1 wicket) and Horne (2.3 overs, 1 run, 1 wicket). For San Fulgencio highest scorers were Williams 17 and Blann 15.

Dropped catches affected both teams, and 18 wides from the Intellectuals shows that improvements need to be made in these areas before the league starts.

Intellectuals Men of the Match - Spence Dawes for bat and ball, Andy Grantham for ball and safe hands.

INTRA-CLUB 25/25 MATCH:

Sunday 30th January (11.00), at Bonalba Cricket Ground

Captain’s day again at Bonalba!

Intellectuals CC intra-club 25/25 match, Sunday, 30th January, 12.00 ( Cricket Ground)

Captain’s XI          119 all out

President’s XI       101 for 9

Captain’s XI won by 18 runs

Good start to the year under blue sunny skies; everyone got a bat (apart from the President) and bowling was pretty evenly shared, so everyone played a part. Man of the match – close call between Chris Horne (12 n/o, 13 for 2 and one catch and Sanson Berriedale (24 runs, 26 for 1, caught and bowled) – the honour, on this occasion, for his gutsy batting performance goes to Sanson for keeping the match alive to the end for the President’s XI.

The AGM was then held.

Main change for 2011 is dropping catches has been outlawed.

Kyle woke up early. It was still dark and it was dead quiet. He noticed thestillness immediately. When he had gone to bed the night before it had been pouring down. In fact it had been raining all day on Saturday; so much so that it had caused a river of water to come flooding through the house. No, there was as much chance of Sunday’s cricket match being on as England making a second innings stand against the Aussies in the first Ashes Test.  Kyle was sure that his chance to team up with his dad and his older brother Jamie and play against the infamous Intellectuals for the Alicante Cup had been washed away by the over night rain. But then again it did seem to have stopped raining and maybe there was still time for the pitch to dry out. “Yeah, and maybe England can bat all day without losing a wicket – fat chance”, thought Kyle.

No, Kyle was sure that once again he’d missed out and he wouldn’t be able to show that even with his mere seven years of age he could bowl as good a line and length as any of the senior players in the Sporting Alfas team.

Given there was no point getting up on both counts– the chance of England still being at the crease and the cricket match being on – he decided to get some more shut-eye. Just as he was about to claim the winning wicket and the Alicante Cup for Sporting Alfas, his slumber was broken by his dad and the words “come on Kyle, time to make a move. Things looking good for our match and England are 309 for 1 at the close, let’s see if we can match their performance today” Kyle couldn’t believe his ears or eyes: England still batting and for the loss of only one wicket. Surely, that should be 301 for 9; and through a gap in his curtains he could see blue skies and sunshine. So it was off to Bonalba to play in the tenth addition of the Alicante Cup afterall!

Kyle knew it was going to be a tough match for the Sporting Alfas team, as they had quite a mixed bag of youth and experience and the not to be underestimated talents of Eve Dawes; a fair and feisty lady, who’s no man’s fool! Arriving at Bonalba Kyle was quite surprised at how dry the pitch was given the amount of rain and that apart from the odd squigy patch the outfield was in good condition too. Having made the toss, it was the Sporting Alfas skipper who elected to bat, knowing that the pitch tended to favour the team batting first. Kyle knew he would only be called onto bat at No. 11, he being the youngest and smallest in the side.  While he was hoping his side would make agood score and therefore that he might not be needed, he was by no means perturbed by having to face the Intellectuals’ attack. And although initially the Alfas openers looked comfortable and edged the score along slowly but surely (Launden scoring 13 and later McKinstry top scoring for Alfas with 17), the innings ended with Kyle coming in as last man and making sure he was not out; thereby helping his side reach a reasonably respectable total of 70 runs.

Nevertheless, Kyle knew it was going to need some good, tight bowling and a couple of early wickets to keep his team in the match. Unfortunately, for Alfas the first wicket came too late with the Intellectuals already well on their way to reaching the required total; Shan shining with a solid 38 runs including 7 fours before being trapped LBW byTaylor.  Kyle was getting frustrated by it all and was itching for a bowl and at a chance to salvage something from the match. At last his chance came when he was called upon by his skip to test the mettle of the Intellectuals’ president McGarry who had come in at No.4. Kyle saw his first over end with only one run scored and McGarry luckily surviving an ardent LBW appeal. With no change of batting at the crease Kyle came up for his second over, more determined than ever to get a wicket before the winning score was reached. With his exceptional line and length he pinned McGarry down –the batsman visibly at odds with the young man’s skilled arm. Then, with his fourth delivery, Kyle finally shattered the floundering batsman’s stumps;claiming a memorable wicket and going on to end the over with a wicket maiden. Although, the match was won and lost shortly after, Kyle knew he had played his part in salvageing some pride for his team.

The match having ended with a victory for the Intellectuals CC, this only the second one in ten years, the final honour however went to Kyle, who was unanamously voted the worthy winner of the man of the match award. Not just for his steady bat and for not conceding his wicket but more for his steely bowling and the taking of the Intellectuals’ president’s wicket (with a totally unplayable ball) and finishing with impressive bowling figures of 2-1-1-1. At the end of the day a great game of cricket had been enjoyed by both teams; 143 runs were scored and 14 wickets were taken – none more important than that taken by Kyle!

Intellectuals CC intra-club match

Sunday, 14th November, 12.00

(Bonalba Cricket Ground) Bonalba GolfResort and Spa (http://www.bonalbagolfresort.com/)

Captain’s XI:          174 all out.

President’s X(I):      98 all out.

Captain’s XI win by 76 runs.

An excellent day of cricket under clear November skies.

Everyone got a bat and 18 players bowled, so everyone played a part. No particular man of the match – too many good performances –but maybe the 108 partnership of Balkar and Waseem for the Captain’s XI was the decisive event.

Congratulations to all who took part.

Intellectuals CC             181 for 9    (S. Dawes 45, N. Ahmed 44; T. Marshall 3-26-5, P. Pennick 2-16-8, B. Marriner 2-41-8 )

Sporting Alfas CC 2XI     32 all out (A. Faulkner 3-11-8, T. Stanford 4-15-7.5, S. Dawes 3-3-3)

Intellectuals CC beat Sporting Alfas 2nd XI CC by 149 runs

Great day of cricket for the Intellectuals; steady start by the top three, but then a batting collapse (losing 5 wickets for 16 runs) was stopped and the last 5 batsmen added over 100. And the target set certainly gave the bowlers a chance. And they took it; openers Ali and Tim taking 7 wickets and then Spence claiming the last 3.

Whilst only needing 7 points to claim fourth in the league, we finally came away with a win and 18 points.

Great team effort.

Intellectuals’ men of the match: Honours shared between Spence, (45 with the bat, 3 wickets for 3 runs off 3 overs), Naveed (44 and holding the tail together), and opening bowlers Alistair and Tim (3 -11 off 8, and 4-15 off 7.5).

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that fields with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And players now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That played with us upon Saint Crispin's Eve."  - apologies to Bill

Alcorcon CC (16 pts) beat Intellectuals CC (6 pts) by 111 runs

Intellectuals’ men of the match: Honours shared between Danny Butcher with bowling figures of 6-1-29-3, along with a fine boundary catch – we won’t mention the one he put down – and Tim Stanford opening the batting and top scoring with 35 runs.

We need 7 points from the last game to go up one more place - 10 wickets and 125 runs, or 8 wickets and 175 runs. (Rain would also be good - Ed.)

Sunday 12th October, at Bonalba Ground

Intellectuals CC              84 all out

Torrevieja CC                  88 for 5

Intellectuals lost by five wickets

(Intellectuals’ man of the match: Spence Dawes, regaining some of his old form with the bat and top scoring with 21 runs. Special mention should go to 7 year old Kyle Roper, who, at short noticed, stepped in to play for the Intellectuals and while batting kept his end in tact helping Miska add 8 runs to the home team’s score and then subsequently coming into bowl a maiden over at the end of the Torrevieja innings).

Thanks go to Brian Pitts for umpiring, John Howden for umpiring and also for stepping in and putting in a very useful performance with bat and ball for the Intellectuals and not to be forgotten our ever appreciated Eve for doing the scoring and of course our gracious opponents from Torrevieja. Indeed thanks to all for a great days entertainment.
